A Most Secret Squadron Bookplate Design

A Most Secret Squadron:
The first full story of 618 Squadron and its special detachment anti-u-boat Mosquitos
by Des Curtis DFC

The Aviation Bookshop commissioned two exclusive, limited edition, bookplates for the release of ‘A Most Secret Squadron’ by Grub Street Publishing. The first bookplate was signed by the author and former 618 Sqn navigator Flt Lt Des Curtis DFC and former 618 Sqn pilot Flt Lt ‘Hilly’ Hillard. The second bookplate was rather unique in the fact it featured someone who was on the receiving end of 618 Squadron’s actions.

The signatory on this one was Obergefrieter Kurt Müller – holder of the Iron Cross, Second Class. He was a former crew member of U-boat Type VIIC ‘U-960’, captained by Oberleutnant zur See Günther Heinrich, that was attacked by two 618 Sqn Mosquitos on the 27th March 1944. The attack resulted in 14 crew members being wounded.
